Slash.
This AU story matches all the criteria except it’s AU. It’s a really good read that I’m going to have to think about for a while. In it, the boys discover a wicker man, which takes Dean into an alternate reality where Dad is alive but has the YED inside of him, Sammy has given over to his darker side, and Dean is like the blonde chick from The Munsters.
The writer took on a great deal working with this kind of story. In the AU, Dean is the most normal of the three of them, who, being evil, kill every hunter they find. It’s a nasty world, and yet Dean feels more loved there than at home. Strange, no? Loved by Sam in particular, and in a very slashy way. When Dean falls asleep there, he wakes up at home, where his troubles can’t be taken care of simply by killing them. And where Sam is distant and troubled and very un-slashy.
I got sucked into this story pretty hard, enjoying the contrast between the two worlds, and the difficulty that grew for Dean to adjust each time he woke up and feell asleep and woke up in a different world. Writer cannily puts in two endings, you get to pick which one, but I thought it would be stronger and make more sense if she really worked up the Good ending. But that’s just me. Soundtrack included.
