“Then, committed to my task, I still had to stop to look up Balthazar. Remember him? I didn’t. But apparently, he’s an angel who wanted to kill Sam and Dean at some point last season. But then, who doesn’t these days; the world is out to get them. Anyway, I had to look him up because I didn’t remember him and he has a scene with Sam, who, foolishly, has to-do list, at the top of which is inscribed: “Mistakes I Need to Make Today.””

“Back the boys go to their grotty hideout. And it is grotty, in a way that motels simply can’t be. The hideout is an abandoned house, complete with visible slats in the walls, mold everywhere, and no overhead lights. By the looks of everything, I’m sure the bathroom is perfectly frightful, so hats off and thumbs up to the set dressers for this one. That Sam and Dean fail to remark on the decrepitude of their current surroundings is rather nice, as well; it implies that they’ve seen worse, stayed in worse. Certainly, they’ve stayed in better, but they’re adaptable boys, so this is far less difficult than most things they’ve had to put up with.”

“Be that as it may, the opening scenes also have Sam and Dean at a BBQ joint somewhere in New York, even though New York State is not really known for being a haven for BBQ joints. But never mind that now. The sun is shining, the brothers are together, and Sam is wearing a green plaid, snap-button shirt, which is one of my absolute favorites for him to wear. He looks so good in green, always, and the snap buttons are just hot, on account of they can be unsnapped so easily, if one’s imagination were inclined to go that way, which mine is. I’m perfectly certain that Show does NOT dress Sam to suit my tastes, but sometimes, like this time, I’m perfectly certain that they do. And then there’s the Samhair, which makes a lovely showing in this scene and fact makes many showings for the rest of the ep.”

“There’re so many things about this ep that were great or laugh-out-loud funny and I had such pleasure watching this one twice. Overall, I adored this episode in a way I haven’t in a long time. I like that Sam’s getting some great lines now. I love that Dean realizes how important Sam is to him, that is, Sam with a soul, which he wants to get back. Even if having a soul and being human means nothing but constant pain and sorrow. Which isn’t exactly true, being a human is pretty cool. There’s joy and happiness and hot chocolate and puppies, and along with watching cool shows like Show, and Stargate: Atlantis and Numb3rs and Starsky & Hutch that makes life worth living. Sure, bad things happen to good people, but that, along with the sorrow that comes when beloved shows are cancelled, is part and parcel of being alive. You can’t have the sweet without the bitter, after all.”

“Plus, Sam begs and asks and cajoles Dean to untie him. Dean says no, no, and not only that, hell no. So in a terrific little move, Sam shakes off the ropes from his wrists and with a twitch stands up and announces that, hey, I’m done being locked up, and you can’t hold me so you might as well fight with me. He refers to himself as “the soulless guy,” which cracked me up. In fact, I laughed a lot during this ep, at funny little comments the characters would say, almost to themselves, under their breath, as though muttering at the absurdity of their situation.”

“This week, Sam and Dean are on the hunt for the Magical McGuffin that causes people to ask for the truth, and, being unable to handle it, to kill themselves in violent and/or messy ways. I’ve already talked about the aforementioned Jane, and the dentist, and next up is Dean. Yes, indeed, he’s a victim of the week in his own right, and of course the reason why is that he wants to know the truth about Sam. Show has been leading up to the fact that there is “an unknown truth” (to quote the Unnamed Romulan Commander from The Enterprise Incident) about Sam. But, this being Show and this being TV, while Dean spends a lot of time on the phone, by the end of the ep, we still don’t know. I wanted to point that out now, so if you’ve not already seen the ep, you won’t get your hopes up.”
