Supernatural Episode Review: Changing Channels

Episodes, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Pink Ray Gun, Reviews, Supernatural Comments Off on Supernatural Episode Review: Changing Channels

My review for the Supernatural episode is up at pinkraygun.com. Enjoy!

An excerpt:

Dean plays the naughty roommate who instead of researching their next job, spent the previous evening “researching” a hot, nubile young lady in his room. He’s all “gosh” and “gee,” and “son of a bitch,” squirming in embarrassment, trying to figure out what he should say next and wondering when it will be over. (Apparently, Dean’s not watched enough sitcoms to know that no matter what you say, the laugh track will always be there.) And all the while, Sam looks on in disparagement, with his arms akimbo and his mouth screwed into a scowl; he’s the straight man here, holding Dean to all those rules that Dean will break, but only when it’s funny.”

Then there’s the poker game itself, where we got to observe and observe and (yawn) observe other people playing. We got to watch cards being shuffled, and poker chips being pushed across the table till I thought I was going to go mad. We even got close-ups of chips being pushed across the table, long, drawn out, loving and perfectly focused, needless and uninteresting close-ups of chips being pushed across the table. Lord, it was better than 5-Hydroxytryptophan for falling asleep.”

Syfy Press Tour – Stargate: Universe

Pink Ray Gun, Reviews, SGU, SPN, Stargate: Universe, Supernatural Comments Off on Syfy Press Tour – Stargate: Universe

Recently I went up to Vancouver for the Syfy Press Tour, and was able finally to write a bit about my adventures. The link to the first part, about Stargate: Universe, is now up at pinkraygun.com. Enjoy!

An excerpt:

I’ve done interviews before, but my first foray into the group interview situation (aka “press junket”) was when I was invited up to

Vancouver for a day of meet and greet with the actors, producers, and writers of some of Syfy channel’s newest and most high-profile shows. Even though it was a bit last minute, who was I to refuse the opportunity to walk amongst the sets and trappings of Caprica, Stargate: Universe, Sanctuary, and Alice? Not to mention the glitter and razzle dazzle of meeting people who I had only previously interacted with through the filter of a TV screen. So yeah, I jumped at the chance. Leapt, even.”A picture… or two

An excerpt:

The fact that itching powder is made of maple seeds is clearly known to Sam does not surprise me. The fact that his ginormous brain knows so many things is well known in canon and fandom. What is marvelous about the walk and talk scene between the brothers is, besides the brotherly DITHERING (which we’ve not seen in ever so long), is Sam’s Samhair in action. As with last week, there’s only a shy bit of forelock trying to make its way across Sam’s forehead. I’m fully comfortable in stating that Show is using Sam’s hair as a psychological marker on purpose because this week, it’s starting to swoop from its stern center part, and also, in delicious addition, there’s dips and curls peaking out from behind his ears, representing Sam’s struggle to escape from his past. Or maybe it’s just damn cute hair!!”

Supernatural Episode Review: Fallen Idols

My review for the Supernatural Episode “Fallen Idols” is up at pinkraygun.com. Enjoy!

An excerpt:

“When it gets fun for me, and in particular for Dean, is when he discovers that the car involved in the mysterious death is none other than the “Little Bastard” which is the name of the car James Dean owned when he was killed on the highway. And I don’t know what was more delicious, either Dean fanboying the car or Sam boyishly not getting it at all, standing there, tall and lean, with that confused look on his face while Dean sweet-talks the car into not killing him. No matter, the boys took off their jackets and rolled up the sleeves of their white button-down shirts and stood in the sunlight for me to admire. Both, on screen, At the Same Time. Was there dialog? I think so….”

An excerpt:

“There’s this terrific scene where the “croats” (infected humans) espy Dean and send him running. My first thought, was oh, good, Dean loves zombies and these are kind of like zombies, so this ought to be fun for him. But second, that there were too many of them, and so Dean takes off running. Running Dean is a very delicious flavor of Dean, you realize. If you don’t, then you need to see this scene. Dean Running, good lord. Run, Dean, run!”

An excerpt:

“It’s nice to see Sam like this because there’s lots and lots of Sam to see, thanks to the camera guy and the lighting guy working in tandem. Sam must have the largest seeing eyes in all the wide, wide world. And he’s luminous, glowing from within, his Samhair trailing his temples even as he’s troubled and struck by massive guilt with the weather reports about hail and fire. Here he is being smacked over the head yet again about how he was the one to start the apocalypse. Much fannish discussion is still ranging as to which brother is more to blame. I don’t think either one of them is to blame for the apocalypse in particular, since both of them were set up from the beginning and fated to play their roles like pawns in a supernatural game of chess.”

Supernatural Episode Review: Good God, Y’All!

My review for the Supernatural Episode “Good God, Y’All!” is up at pinkraygun.com. Enjoy!

An excerpt:

I’ll admit to rather liking this scene, and it’s not really (only) because Sam was tied up, and he looks really good dripping wet, but because Sam got a Scene. All To Himself. Which is a marvelous thing, and a very rare animal. What’s good here is the closeups of Sam’s face. Oh, how I’ve missed this face, this kind of closeup, this kind of lighting and all for Sam. He’s all messed up and dappled with salt and blood and his eyes are enormous, like one of Margaret Keane’s big eyed children. His hair is tousled and the boy looks wrecked. Why are they more adorable like this?

An excerpt:

“You like reunion scenes? I do. Especially when they begin like this one. Dean’s eyes are glittering as he sees Sam and hugs him hard enough to squeeze the life out of him. Sam, in his little brother way, is disoriented and complains that Dean is hugging too hard, and that’s when the lies begin. And I don’t mean one or two little white lies. I mean big whoppers that start a trend that last for the next freaking two seasons. Two seasons, people! Two WHOLE seasons of Sam and Dean prevaricating and stooping to subterfuge and all kinds of dishonest shenanigans, which leads ultimately, as I have said, to a dearth of brotherly touching. So live it up while you can, kids.”
