“Plus, Sam begs and asks and cajoles Dean to untie him. Dean says no, no, and not only that, hell no. So in a terrific little move, Sam shakes off the ropes from his wrists and with a twitch stands up and announces that, hey, I’m done being locked up, and you can’t hold me so you might as well fight with me. He refers to himself as “the soulless guy,” which cracked me up. In fact, I laughed a lot during this ep, at funny little comments the characters would say, almost to themselves, under their breath, as though muttering at the absurdity of their situation.”

“This week, Sam and Dean are on the hunt for the Magical McGuffin that causes people to ask for the truth, and, being unable to handle it, to kill themselves in violent and/or messy ways. I’ve already talked about the aforementioned Jane, and the dentist, and next up is Dean. Yes, indeed, he’s a victim of the week in his own right, and of course the reason why is that he wants to know the truth about Sam. Show has been leading up to the fact that there is “an unknown truth” (to quote the Unnamed Romulan Commander from The Enterprise Incident) about Sam. But, this being Show and this being TV, while Dean spends a lot of time on the phone, by the end of the ep, we still don’t know. I wanted to point that out now, so if you’ve not already seen the ep, you won’t get your hopes up.”

“But, most importantly, we see Sam and Dean drinking beer together. It’s so unusual that Dean actually comments on it. He says, “When’s the last time we had a beer together anyway?” Sam, who doesn’t appear to appreciate the brotherly moment, doesn’t answer, but instead jerks his chin at the vampires he thinks he sees. So, what, like, you can tell someone’s a vampire just by looking at them now, Sam? In a bar full of people pretending to be vampires, you can spot the real ones? Pull the other ones, it’s got bells on. A vampire’s best strategy is fitting in with the local population, so I hardly think it’s likely, what Sam’s doing.”

“After watching this ep, I still don’t like MB. I still think he’s overused, inorganic, and retconned. I still think he rescues Sam and Dean far too often, like, all the time, and I am so frakking tired of how he does the boys’ their research for them. But. If the glimpse I got of Bobby Singer in this episode is what Bobby-fans are seeing all the time? Then I can completely get why they adore him.”

“More proof of this is Dean’s pleasure at having Sam back at his side. This is amply demonstrated when Sam’s bad boy has been bashed to bits in the angel puddle battle. Instead of commiserating with Sam, Dean says, casually, “Okay, silver lining.” Because, as you can see, if Sam has no car, he must sit in the Sam Seat once again, and join Dean inside the confines of the Impala as the two brothers rocket down the road. I get that Show felt it had to build up to this point in the story line, that they wanted to give us all a momentary concern to up the ante, but really. This is all we want, the rest of it is just window dressing.”

“Let’s talk about Lisa, which is just about as bad, because, frankly, I can’t seem to pin her down. Is she a good influence or is she just a millstone around Dean’s neck? She certainly seems to represent home and hearth, if not to Dean, then at least to the viewers, and yeah, to Sam. I’m pretty sure Dean likes her, is fond of her and Ben, and he really wants to keep them safe. But however many roots he’s planted, his feet seem mighty itchy. Otherwise, why would he come so quickly when Sam whistles for him? I’m not complaining, ye ken, I’m just pointing it out. Dean tries to be all coy over the phone, but even though Sam can’t see his face, he knows that even though Dean’s saying no, no with that lovely mouth of his, he’s saying yes, yes with his eyes. And his heart.”

“Sam and Dean drive off in the Impala. In the rain. There’s some cool chiaroscuro lighting on rain-dappled faces, and for me it really doesn’t get any better than this. The boys discuss Dean’s bad feelings about their plans, and then Sam talks seriously to Dean, but not about last words of goodbye. It’s not that all the words between them have been said and there’s nothing more to say. It’s that between them they are saying it, and have been saying it, hello, and goodbye, and I love you, every minute of every day. So there’s no point saying it if it’s already being said. I really liked this scene, obviously.”

“MB starts handing out intel, like how many people will die in the upcoming disaster in Chicago, like it’s candy. Even as I’m wondering how he knows this, Sam asks the obvious question, how did you put all this together, anyways? Just as I’m about to suspect that MB went ahead and made that deal with the crossroads demon, ta-da, in walks Crowley. It’s predictable but fun. It also means that Sam is the only one who hasn’t made a crossroads deal, though not for lack of trying. And then, just as I’m about to ask the most obvious next question, Sam asks it for me. He got the expression of a 12 year old looking at the innards of dead animal he’s just discovered run over in the road. It’s terribly gross to contemplate, but he just can’t help himself, so Sam looks at MB and says, “Did you kiss him?” (So cute.)”

“Sam is full of Dutch courage (desperate and wound up the entire time) and starts implying what he thinks he ought to do. The line where Sam spells out his idea to MB is classy: “What if you guys lead the devil to the edge, and I jump in?” After which Sam assumes he can take back “the wheel” and all will be well. Except that the demon he’s allowed to possess his body would be none other than the Morning Star himself, and it would get a little more tricky to get away with than your average, everyday demon. MB rightfully objects; he doesn’t want either boy to die a hero’s death, obviously, and neither do I. That is, I don’t want them to die, period.”

“And I did like that Dean notices that Sam was uptight, and encourages him to unpucker and try to relax for once. And best of all, that Dean reiterated that he still was keeping the faith and wasn’t giving up. (He does this with some marvelous eye contact, making sure that Sam understands exactly what he’s saying.) Dean thinks they have earned the right to eat all the pie they can manage. As for Sam, he urges that they go back on the road. He’s reverted back to being the sensible one, the way he was in Season One, only this time around, his caution is tempered with experience, so what used to come across as sulky complaining, now comes across as good advice. Which neither one of them follows, leaving them stuck in the hotel.”
